How to choose between grade 8.8 and grade 10.9 carbon steel bolts for solar mounting, with tensile / proof load specs, cost comparison, and corrosion plating choices.

Grade 8.8 vs Grade 10.9 Bolts for Solar Mounting

When you are quoting fasteners for a 5 MW utility solar farm or a 50 kW commercial rooftop, the choice between grade 8.8 and grade 10.9 carbon-steel bolts is often made by procurement without engineering review — and frequently wrong. This article explains the mechanical differences, the corrosion implications, and the four scenarios where each grade is correctly specified.

What the grade numbers actually mean

The two-number grade designation comes from ISO 898-1 for carbon-steel bolts:

  • Grade 8.8: ultimate tensile strength = 800 MPa; yield strength = 0.8 × 800 = 640 MPa
  • Grade 10.9: ultimate tensile strength = 1,000 MPa; yield strength = 0.9 × 1,000 = 900 MPa (in practice 940 MPa proof load)
  • Grade 12.9: 1,200 MPa tensile / 1,080 MPa yield — rarely used in solar mounting

In stainless-steel terminology the equivalent designations are A2-70 (SS304, 700 MPa tensile) and A4-70 (SS316, 700 MPa tensile) — and A2-80 / A4-80 for the cold-worked 800 MPa variants. Note that even the strongest stainless variants are typically weaker than carbon-steel 8.8.

Where each grade actually belongs

Use grade 8.8 (HDG) for:

  • Ground-mount steel pile-to-pile bolted connections (carbon-to-carbon structural)
  • Large carport main frame joints (steel I-beam to steel I-beam)
  • Tracker drive-train shaft connections (high cyclic load)
  • Foundation anchor bolts to concrete piers

Use grade 10.9 (HDG) for:

  • Tracker main-shaft pivot bearings (high stress concentration)
  • Heavy-duty bracing on commercial carports above 6 m clear span
  • Custom heavy-duty cantilever brackets
  • Hi-tensile structural connections specified by a stamping engineer

Do NOT use carbon-steel (any grade) for:

  • Clamp-to-rail (mid clamp, end clamp) — always SS304 / SS316
  • Rail-to-L-foot — always SS304 / SS316
  • Roof penetration self-drilling screws — always SS or coated structural
  • Any aluminum-to-steel contact point — always stainless

The reason is galvanic corrosion: aluminum is more anodic than carbon steel, so the steel acts as cathode and the aluminum corrodes away around the bolt head — leaving a stained, weakened rail within 12–24 months in humid or coastal atmospheres.

Two-line decision rule for procurement teams

  1. Touching aluminum? → Stainless (SS304 inland, SS316 coastal). Bolt grade question is irrelevant.
  2. Steel-to-steel structural joint? → Grade 8.8 HDG by default, grade 10.9 HDG if the stamping engineer specifies.

Anything outside these two rules deserves an engineering review.
